Feeling lethargic when Nature is urging us to hibernate during the winter months is nothing new. What can be new and life changing (for the better) is how you counter that lethargy.
One of the simplest methods to counteract constant tiredness and feeling lethargic and having these impact on the rest of your day is to drink water as soon as you wake up.
Drinking water first thing in the morning:
Jump-starts your metabolism. The food we consume on a daily basis is metabolised and transported by way of water throughout the body. Having a sufficient amount of water in your system helps fire up your metabolism; it can also help with not eating too much. When we’re not adequately hydrated, we often mistake thirst for hunger, which can lead us to eat more.*
Helps fuel your brain. When it comes to daily productivity, hydration is crucial. The human brain consists of 73% water, so staying hydrated is especially essential for maintaining optimal brain activity. It is, of course, a daylong process, but starting with a glass of water right away is a step in the right direction.
The mornings set the tone for the rest of your day. If you feel sluggish, it will reflect in your morning activities/workouts, productivity at work, in fact, any daytime routine.*
Immediately helps rehydrate the body. Sleeping for hours is a long time to go without any water consumption. Drinking at least a glass (or two) of water right when you wake up is a good way to quickly rehydrate your body. So before you reach for that cuppa or coffee, rather refresh with water and kick start your day in the right manner.*
Increases your level of alertness. One of the biggest indicators of lethargy or low energy is that you are dehydrated. Because water aids in both body regulation and brain function, it is also closely related to balancing out our moods.
After a long period without anything to eat or drink, the first thing you consume in the morning can be a shock to the body. If that first thing is water, it will get the body working and can boost your alertness and low energy levels.*

Chances are when the chill sets in we look to hydration being more hot water drinks than remarkably water rich winter friendly fruit like pears, clementines and even date plums.
Drinking enough water to maintain sufficient hydration when the weather is cold can be difficult. There’s also a tendency to drink high-sugar content hot water drinks such as hot chocolate instead of plain, heated water. Which is why considering healthier high water content alternates may often be overlooked, which is a pity , as water rich winter fruit offers far more than just contributing towards a good daily water intake.
Pears, all varieties, are a great source of vitamins C and K. With water content upwards of 80%, you couldn’t ask for a better fruit to contribute towards health and hydration during cooler weather. They are perfect to throw into a lunch bag, can be eaten whole and leave very little waste*. You can even poach, steam, or roast them for use as a healthier dessert option.
A mixture of a mandarin orange and a sweet orange*, Clementine’s are available all year long and are excellent sources of vitamin C. They are also a source of vitamin B6, Calcium and Magnesium and with an 87% water content, this delicious, juicy segmented fruit are the perfect energy boosting fruit for winter snacking.
Date Plums. These small yellow plums are packed with fibre, vitamins A and C, and they contain no cholesterol. They can help to boost your immune system in peak flu season, and perhaps best of all, they taste great*.
As we head into the colder months, it’s understandable that we may veer away from topping up our water from the water cooler as much as we do when it’s warmer. But this is a mistake – our bodies still need to hydrate irrespective of the weather. What may be worth considering is to ramp up your daily water intake with high water content, vitamin rich fruit.

Although preferring hot drinks when the weather is cooler is perfectly understandable, these aren’t necessarily the healthiest of hydration options – especially tummy warming, tasty beverages like a mug of rich hot chocolate.
Which is why, when it’s chilly, it may be wise to look at healthier alternatives, which not only help us maintain good hydration but also play a part in boosting our body’s immune systems.
Water, Hot or Cool, is best
Drinking water regularly, throughout the day, remains the simplest route to hydrate your way healthily.
With that established, we move on to a variety of water health cheats that you may not have considered, until now.
Vitamin C boost
Adding the juice of half a lemon to a glass of water as hot as you can drink it every morning is a sure-fire way to help get your system moving.
Add honey to the health mix
Honey is used as an anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antibacterial agent, as well as being a natural sweetener. Adding a spoon to hot lemon water packs a powerful health punch, all in one glass of water.
Tea, of course!
It goes without saying that nothing beats a cuppa, so that we have hot water coolered, however, as green tea packs a higher punch of antioxidants, perhaps it’s time to switch up from black tea to green.
Perhaps keep all or one of the above top of mind when you head to your water cooler to top-up/replenish or dispense your first hot water tipple of the day.

Today is the International Day of Charity. As an organisation, AquAid, with our focus on giving back since our inception in 1998, acknowledging this day is immensely significant.
For over twenty-two years, AquAid has donated a portion of revenue to charities, predominantly to both Christian Aid and The Africa Trust.
Founded in 1941, the mission of Christian Aid is to eradicate the causes of poverty, striving to achieve equality, dignity and freedom for all, regardless of faith or nationality. AquAid have supported Christian Aid for more than twenty years, donating over £3.7 million to water and capacity building projects around the world.
Since its formation in 2010, The Africa Trust has worked tirelessly to create sustainable solutions that include establishing supplies of clean, productive drinking water and decent sanitation to thousands of communities in water scarce regions across Africa. Wealth creation is another important objective, with business skills training helping school leavers and villagers to start or expand profitable businesses.
This year’s International Day of Charity resonates even more so with all of us at AquAid as the company has recently reached donations exceeding £19 million. This amount has enabled us to provide life-changing assistance to more than 3 million people around the globe and predominantly throughout Africa.
We would like to dedicate this achievement to Paul Searle, AquAid’s Founder, Managing Director and Chairman, whose faith and unquenchable spirit was the driving force that kept AquAid growing and expanding for over two decades, all while never losing sight of the importance of contributing to charity.
Should you too wish to partner with AquAid in this continuing commitment to charity while keeping your organisation hydrated, please contact us – we will be happy to assist.

Europe’s largest traffic light equipment manufacturer and hirer, SRL Traffic Systems (SRL) lead the way in the Highways sector.
Over the last few years, the company has enjoyed considerable growth, expanding its product offering to include security barriers, digital signage and CCTV. Now, with more than 200 employees, SRL has 30 regional depots situated around the UK and Ireland. The company also boasts new, impressive Headquarters and a unique Innovation Centre.
SRL predominantly work in an industry that operates within a risky environment by its very nature. Chris Thornley, procurement manager at SRL adds, “The management team always try to reflect on the services and support which we give to our team and do all that we can to make their jobs easier and safer.”
SRL acknowledge that keeping the team hydrated helps everyone to perform at their very best throughout the workday. Indeed, studies have shown that workers who have quick and easy access to drinking water are subsequently 25% more productive and happy at work, than those who go without.
Chris added, “With the opening of our new Technical and Innovation Centre, Winsford HQ and several new regional depots, we sought to find a supplier who could offer a sustainable solution to water provision. SRL’s partnership with AquAid, is another small step towards improving our sustainability – and even more importantly, has some incredible social benefits, too.”
The World Health Organisation states that water scarcity continues to affect one in three people, yet it’s something we take for granted every day. SRL’s unique relationship with AquAid has also given SRL the opportunity to help those less fortunate than ourselves, because with each purchase an automatic donation is made to The Africa Trust.
The funds from the purchase of AquAid water coolers will be used to build ‘Elephant Pumps’ – a modified version of an age-old Chinese rope pulley system, providing a much-needed source of clean and fresh drinking water for many.
AquAid look forward to being able to present the SRL team with a certificate, a photo of the pump and a letter of thanks for their participation in this life-changing build in due course.
